It is now possible to remove A and B antigens from the surface of RBCs and convert them to O group blood enzymatically. The blood cells thus obtained are called enzymatically converted O group red cells or ECO red cells. This simple, yet powerful technique can reduce the logistical and economic burden on the delivery of safe and adequate blood supply especially at times of emergency.
